Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit, non-denominational Christian movement dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and to making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat is founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, decent and affordable place to live in dignity and safety.

Habitat for Humanity is committed to the vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Since its founding in 1976, Habitat has built more than 300,000 houses worldwide, providing simple, decent and affordable shelter for more than 1.5 million people in over 90 countries.

Global Village is Habitat for Humanity's international volunteer programme. Since the Global Village Programme began in Northern Ireland in 1999 over 200 teams have built homes alongside families in some of the world's most vulnerable communities. This year over 20 Global Village teams are travelling from Northern Ireland. Teams include groups from churches, schools, universities, companies and other community organisations.

Habitat for Humanity currently builds in more than 90 countries, around 40 of them host Global Village volunteer teams.

We will be travelling to Mozambique as part of Habitat for Humanity’s ‘Orphans and Vulnerable Children’s (OVC)’ Programme.

This year’s Mozambique team is of 14 volunteers from around Down, Armagh and Antrim.

We’ll be building in the Gaza region, near the town of Xai Xai, the capital of the province, and a new area for Habitat’s OVC programme.

The communities we work in are some of the poorest in the region, with Aids affecting many. The OVC programme has made a huge impact on these communities, providing many with not only housing, but inheritance rights, land ownership and presenting income generation opportunities for those in need.

We have great hopes to help a new generation of children.  This of course depends on the support we receive before we leave.

Global Village teams fundraise to help Habitat for Humanity achieve its vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Since the programme began in 1999 teams have raised more than £1.7 million in donation monies alone. Donations are used to help fund Habitats work worldwide including a donation towards the project where you will be working. In most countries, team fundraising will fund at least one complete house.

Direct costs include travel, accommodation, insurance, food and water.

Habitat ask volunteers to make a donation towards the building costs of the houses in the host country and towards the costs of hosting volunteer teams. We have an enormous vision for a world where everyone has a decent place to live. We need funds to make this a reality. Taking part in a Global Village team is about volunteering your time and about raising as much money as you can for house-building projects.
